layout question

I created a standard layout with a headder, footer and two colums. (left and main).
I put a navigation in the left column. Under the navigation should be a picture. The height of the table is 100%. The height of the main column for the content is also 100%.
My problem: How can I get, that the table of the left column has the same height like the table of the main column?
