PhpWCMS: Designer/Integrator, Seeking job in Québec City

Post by StudioZ »

OK.

Murphy's law -> Today Stroked me

You know how much I praised Site5 hosting services ...
Well... today I lost all my websites and all that hard work,
due to a major crash, and due to the fact that the backup disk data
was unusable (corrupted said Site5).
http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?t=607859
All the users comments affected by that server issue
have been censored out of the Forums.
Their Forums are a real DisneyLand.
Never ever seen such a bad attitude from a hosting company.
Anyways... Life continues...

Of course I have graphic files and basic SQL data that
could help me a bit to recontruct all this but still...
it would be a major time consuming job to do it and...
not sure?
I was working hard. Real hard, on my Logotypes.ca Website.
Logotypes contracts were slowly growing and coming in ... then... pouffff!

I have a lesson to take from this.
Never trust any hosting company for the Backups
even if they are listed in the Top Hosts Chart.
You can only rely on yourself.
I should had renew my RSYNC data backup I had in a distant location.
This was working perfectly when I had my own server at ThePlanet.
A chance I was not hosting anymore GOV Agencies.
I would be in BIG troubles.

Now... Time to find a Job!
It's time for me to rapidly find a job here in the Quebec City area,
where I am now seeking an organisation or enterprise which
would be in need of a person who would take care of all the aspects of their Website,
through such a great Open Source project as PhWCMS is.
Would just love to make evolve a PhpWCMS website
for people who would appreciate all it's functionnalities and
graphic capabilities and flexibility.

If ever someone reading this post here hear about
a job in the Québec area for me ... Please let me know ASAP.
I am ready to start NOW on a regular basis, full time and/or part time.

Thank you for reading.

Sincerly,

Yves Malouin

Hi Yves,

oh man, what a BIG SHI...
Do you mean "all your own sites", or "oll the sites, you have realised for your customers too"???

Hope, only the first answer?! But, bad enough!

I will make a backup of all my sites today.... it's better. And a weekly backup in the future... I DO understand it NOW, what a problem it is!!!

But... there MUST be specialsits, which are able to "SAVE" a damaged disk!!!
Not the cheapest way... but better than NO solution!!!

All my own sites only. I made sure that my customers would be hosted on different servers. This is the good part of the story.

Yep. Don't hesitate. This is the best preventive action you can take now:wink:

Sure there is specialists. This happened to me recently on my Dell Laptop and I had a Shop here in Québec (Micro Logic) restored successfully all my data and copy it to a new disk. I even suggested Site5 to hire them on location to urgently restore the data for us (Site5 customers) on that server. But... you know how it is... It's easier to say:
"Sorry. There's nothing we can do about it, we will give you a 12 months credit."

Oh well... I don't want the money. I only want my data

Anyhow... thanks for dropping in Pepe 8)

Hi Pico,

Tought about it. Did a search and found texts which are 3 weeks back.
What I miss the most is all these tweaks I done here and there in the templates,
forms, texts, clients zones (FELogin), the eShop (Payment Workflow).
I think for now I will light up a smoke, take a deep breath, -- as weird as it may sound
-- and focus on delivering engaged logo contrats and then... will see ... hopefully meanwhile... the phone will be my best friend ...
Not sure I want to recontruct all this. I always been a fighter but..
with three kids, sometimes you have to reconsider a bunch of things.

I am the only one to blame in this journey.
Never beleive that THEY will host you like YOU DID yourself.
When I was hosting GOV. agencies on my own server at ThePlanet,
I also a had a backup disk for daily backups but... also
made sure I had a distant backup (3 days intervals) into another
datacenter (2 000 KM away) managed through RSYNC.
I then had frequent 120 days uptimes.
All my clients were very well served. Should anything bad happen,
then... I could rely anytime on that full distant backup.

yep - Backups are always a Kind of things what will not be done carefully - until the first Time you need it ;)
I had to learn it too - when my Localserver gots a fault on Harddisk - so I thought - doesn't matter - I'm usung RAID
but the stupid thing was, that this dammed RAID from Onboard Controller only work with 2 identical Harddisks and
after 2 Years it's not easy to get one identical HD :(
but I got it from France after 2 Day's searching.

My luck was, that the Harddisc had 'only' a Controller fault - so I mountet the Controller from the new HD into the old HD and everything went fine :)
From this Day(s) on I do Backup to external Disks everey Night - and switch between 2 Disks every Day and take the one with me - out of the Office.

A Friend had the Prob that some Gangsters has stolen his complete Inventory of his Office including all Backup-Disks and Tapes :( he started at 0 with his Business  so I learned this too - take away the Backup to another Place

hope for you that they will fix it and your work is not lost forever.

Little Update

I had a special meeting with my small Family Council
where they suggested me to go ahead and reconstruct ...
all I could for a basic site. So...
I decided to roll up my sleeves and spent last few days grouping
all the files I would need for THE job.
Luckily I have been able to find enough stuff on my local drives. :D

From now on, my CRON jobs will not only save a backup of the databases
on the server but... most importantly: will email and save these
to my local drive.

Reconstruction is on the way ! :D

Cheers,

Yves

I recommend to use mysqldumper. This script does daily updates of my db automatically. It's good stuff!
