how to add an image to a template

hey I'm trying to add an image to the right hand side box of my template, but not having any luck. I tried just putting an image tag in the right section, which i do have in my page layout, but it doesn't show up. Any suggestions? Or is there a guide for templates that goes more indepth than the quickstart?

it doesn't go nearly as in depth as i need tho.

i think you know html

so you add in the templates images the same way you add them whe you create pages with html
