The documentation states:
"If the level contains more than one article a menu is shown which lists the articles contained in the structure level in descending chronological order.

Also, I need help with understanding how to set up the template <div> tags and how to set a menu in place.

Go to ADMIN and set the integer (-1) of top articles up to 10

and you will see, what happens....

I did try that and it works fine. There is no clue in the documentation that this has such a wide ranging affect.

I love this application.
