Package Manager Updater and MOD Installer

Post by forefront »

A fantastic addition to phpWCMS would be a package manager like the one used in Simple Machines Forum (http://www.simplemachines.org). This wonderful addition to their forum software allows you to download the selected MOD or update and then install it into the package. It even does uninstalls to roll back installs done in the wrong order to resolve MOD dependencies. It also keeps track of all of the MODs/updates so you always know what versions you have installed. It's simple and easy to use.

For example, there's the current ongoing discussion of WYSIWYG editors, which occupy large amounts of disk space and make for LONG uploads. With a package manager, a simple editor could be installed by default and any number of additional ones could be simply downloaded and installed by the package manager to suit the developer's need.

This could make life easier and bring order to all of the hacking and customization that goes on with phpWCMS, not mention the mess that upgrades are creating.

such package installer is very time expensive. Patch packages will be available with next major release.

I understand completely ... but please keep it on your list for the future. A Patch Manager (I like "Updater" better) will help to bring order to the ongoing improvement process. For that, I thank you in advance.
