alone vs team

Post by feios »

I have one question for Oliver i suppose

Why he made this script alone and don't organize a team to work together on PHPWCMS???

It's better i think to work with some another peoples on this script.

Hi feios,

yes but if u look at the pple who contribute, he actually works with a team but he finally decides when and where the changes are included in the core code.
There are some ideas about forking phpwcms, but as far as I'm concerned I can live with OG keeping the thing together (on his "own") eventhough sometimes it's a little frustrating, but he delivers such a good product that I don't see why I shouldn't trust him till the end. He deserves all the credit (as well as Pappnase and many many others for their contributions), and all the pple that help in the forum and code for phpwcms being a better CMS. So that's what I do: trust and try to help with my own means. OG build it, he decides, that's the way I see it.

Cheers

Yeah, ok, i agree with you BUT here is one BIG BUT!

If "tomorrow" OG decide to leave developing of PHPWCMS what we are doing after that?

In a team one member can left the team but the rest of it continue to work on project....

You're right too... BUT ;) I don't think he'll leave, he put too much of his own into this and the community is able to keep things going on, don't you think? When I see all the add-ons, hacks, changes... Well it's true that there is only 1 OG but nobody is irreplacable eventhough god forbid he stops it, he's too much of a coder/thinker to be easily replaced.
And let's not forget this is Open Source, so many pple with mysql/php skills can work on it too.
And pappnase said yesterday he was just chilling out a little, he deserves it too, imagine every day coding, changing, listening, replying to posts/emails and working (during daylight, to feed himself), and having cats and a wife... WOW :!: :!:
And I thought my life was a busy one... ;)

I think of Oliver much as others probably think of Linus Torvalds. He doesn't nececcarily do all of the work, but he IS the final say in the Linux product. As others have pointed out, there is a risk in this approach, but personally, I think the benefits outweigh the risks. It ensures a consistent, uniform product and a single-minded direction. Designing software by committee always means compromises, whereas a single vision means fewer compromises and a more focused direction. At least, that's my opinion.

Also, my personal opinion is that there is a far too much hacking and modifying of core code and updates/upgrades are becoming more and more difficult to do successfully. This will ultimately have people saying "this is really nice software, but you have to be a PHP programmer to make it work." I have suggested a package manager in feature requests to address this issue for the future, which I think would go a long way toward preventing the issue I mentioned.

phpWCMS is the ONLY CMS I use, so I have a vested interest in helping to ensure its continued success.

Same here, I prefer to go with ONE cms, the best IMHO.
It is true though that you have to have some PHP skills to achieve some -very particular- things, but overall, you can do virtually everything without being a coder.

PHPWCMS might not be the BEST tool for all you internet projects but it is -mark my words- the BEST for people having average/advanced HTML-CSS-PHP skills. And is very good for pple with no tech skills.
It allows you to do everything even if ur alone on a project. Give me studio(DW-Flash)-photoshop-phpwcms and I feel I can build almost everything I see on the net :D

As for OG beign alone, he's not, but he decides alone (listening also) what proved so far being a good policy. So, I trust him.
