Move contents into a new data base or Restore - Please help

I have been using this amazing cms for sometime now and have version 1.1 active on my site, I have now, using cpanel fantastico scripts installed a newer version 1.4 on my site in a different directory and a new DB.

I would like to move my old entries in the new database, I have tried copy/paste into the new db but that changes the date the article was created.

Do any of you know an easier or automatic way of doing this?

I dont think i can use backup/restore as there is less number of tables in the previous version and the table structure might be different.

I do not have any other machine where I can risk a hit and try method.

Can anyone please help me out here...

I know I can upgrade the existing installation but I'm a bit wary of the steps involved - plus as I said I dont have anywhere to practice or make sure that what I'm doing is the correct procedure to upgrade. So if i mess up, i will loose my entire site!!!
