About Using Replacement Tags

I am A newb just setting up my first PHPwcms website - i would like to add a menu using the {NAV_TABLE_COLUMN} tag - but i can not seem to make it work - i have entered it everywhere - do i need to add code to it - does it go somewhere special - please lend a helping thought as to what i might be able to do to resolve this issue and to learn how to use these Replacement Tags
