I noticed that if I have multiple navigation menus, for instance:
{NAV_LIST_TOP} in the header
{NAV_TABLE_COLUMN:1} in the main block
{NAV_LIST_CURRENT} in the right block
{NAV_TABLE_COLUMN} in the right block
(this setup is for testing only), then regardless in which menu/item I click on, all the other menus get automatically positioned on the same menu item (if they have it).
In other words, all the navigation menus act in sync, and selecting an item in one of them causes a selection to occur automatically in the other ones, without any further interaction from me.
Is this by design? Would it not not be better if the menus were acting independently and not propagate the selection to the other menus?
Effect of menu selection with multiple navigation tags

Not sure how to answer your question, but this is the first time I see this navigation model.
On most sites which have a top navigation menu and another side menu, when I use the side menu, the top menu does not change from one section to another.
In other words, if I select "News" in the top menu, then I can navigate as much as I want on the side menu (which is a menu for news categories), and this only brings up content in the "News" section, it does not change the top menu from "News" to "Articles".
Perhaps I am not using the tags correctly...

Hm,
this might be correct. And I understand.
But maybe this is something you have to solve by using different templates for different sections. That's why I reworked the new NAV_TABLE_COLUMN. Only this menu gives you the possibilties to change the entry level.
These menues are act based on current structure selection.

Hey, Oliver, when do you sleep? It is 2am over there!!!
Well, that's exactly what I was going to try next: use several templates and have each one its own secondary (side column) menu, but here's what came up while I was trying this out:
