ImageMagic/Ghostscript - what use are they?

I'm planning on installing phpwcms and in the documentation it recomends installing Imagemagic and ghostscript prior to installing phpWCMS.

My questions are:

Is it necessary? If I don't install it...what functionalyity of phpWCMS won't I be able to use?

My server has GD installed on it....I understand that can be used instead of Imagemagic...what is the process for using GD instead of ImageMagic?

hello

imagick has a better image quality!
but if you haven't IM then use GD2 and it will work fine
