Still confused about the index

Got the system installed (thanks dude who did it) but im still confused (and yes this ill be a running theme)
The index link times out as per the faq but im confused as heck where im supposed to point it to or indeed what to do with it.
Any help?

Sorry for the gibberish. That will teach me to post late at night.
Ok what I am confused about is the index.php. Am I correct in thinking that the index.php points to a blank file to start with?
Basically... ok the standard installation has a blank index.php technically. Im wondering how you put content for the index page

you by yourself place content in the index.php when you create content!

So when i creat articles and set them to live teh Index page will automatically update and create itself?
If thats the case how can i get the following setup
small image to the left of a paragraph of text which is generated from the summary of an article?
