File uploading problem

I get this error:

"Error while writing file to storage (1)"
"Please dont try again - this is an server error! Contact your webmaster as soon as possible!"

when trying to upload files and when trying to overtake ftp'd files.

I've set all the directories to 777.

When calling phpinfo() it shows :
upload_tmp_dir: no value

Is this the problem? What directory are the files trying to write to?

are also the folders in the filestorage (1-10) set to chmod 777?!

yes they are all at 777
