In the backend, under "ADMIN", there is an option in the left navigation called, "file categories". You can go there and create file categories.

To the right of an existing category, there is a "+" symbol, and when you click on it, it takes you to a screen that allows you to assign a key to that category.

I ask because I'm working on documentation for WCMS, and need to know what this is supposed to do. Also, I get an error message when I try to perform this function, and so I'm also exploring why that is happening.

my best guess

From my understanding of file categories, they are a simple way to assign keywords to groupings of files. For instance, I have set up a file category of images, with keys of people, buildings, icons, other. Then, when uploading or editing a file, you are able to select what type of image it is from the pre-defined list of file keys. This allows for consistency of keywords from one user to another, as well as adding the ability to search by file key. This is my perception of what file categories and keys are used for.
