My registrar (123-Reg) now select ALL domains for auto-renewal if they have your credit card details on file. Plus, they will auto-renew TLDs for three years instead of one if you don't intervene.
To be fair, 123-Reg send plenty of reminder emails, but if you are a customer, don't leave it too late before deciding what to do about a domain. If you do nothing, your card will be charged.
