I am using 1.3.3 and the facts are as follows:

- I was creating a picture gallery and uploaded around 50 pictures using fto takeover
- the pictures were too big, so decided to upload a smaller versions of them using ftp takeover again to the same file directory. All of them had the same name and "replace eponymous files" option was selected. I repeated this process two times, because I wanted to correct quality of some of them, etc.
- Things were apparently ok, and the new files are shown now with the correct size and quality in the frontend.

the problems

- Old files are still in filearchive folder. by mistake I uploaded files with more than 1MB, that means that there is filearchive more than 50-70Mb that are not necessary of being preserved (that is a big % of the complete size of my website in Mb!!).
- When checking the file properties through the file area in the backend it is shown the initial size of the file, and when selecting download the one that is downloaded is the small and correct one.

question
- what is the safest way for deleting the pictures that are not in use from filearchive directory?

Hi Evoplure,

first make sure that "filearchive/can_be_deleted/" is writable.
Go to backend -> file -> empty trash can, than go to to backend -> admin -> remove delete files.
Now all unneeded files are in "filearchive/can_be_deleted/". Delete them if you want.

"filearchive/can_be_deleted/" is writable (777) and that works perfectly when I delete a file using the delete option in the backend.

but my problem is specifically when I upload files with the ftp takeover feature, the old ones should be automatically deleted or replaced in "filearchive/", which is not the case: I select "replace eponymous files", but the old ones are kept in "filearchive/" with the new ones (that were assigned different names).

browsing in the file area of the backend shows only the last ones: apparently the old one were deleted/replaced, but they are still in "filearchive" folder and, therefore, it is not possible delete them manually from the backend!: I have just tried to delete one of these files, and only the new one appear in "filearchive/can_be_deleted/", so I suppose the old one are still in "filearchive"....]

hm, yes right - seems is missing. I think I should mark the replaced as trashed.

But I must proof...

Maybe someone can try it too.
