New site, some help needed

Hi guys!
I'm new of this CMS...It's a great tool to menage web contents!
I'm just creating a new website...but I need an hand:
how can I create a news box in which people can see the title and the date of the article I insert in my pages?
this is one screenshot of the homepage:
on the left side I want to insert my list of news...but...how?
any ideas?
