confused update form 1.1 RC4 to 1.2.8

Post by dieter.kors »

I'm really confused.

I want to update from 1.1 RC4 to 1.2.8 and I'm following the tutorial on http://www.phpwcms-docu.de/update_to_dev._1.1.x.phtml but I don't understand 1 crucial thing:

1. back up all files - done
2. back db - done
3. edit certain files - okay, done
4. The tutorial says:
"Now you have to upload the adapted developer version with an ftp program and overwrite the existing version."
So they want me to copy the new 1.2.8. DEV 'phpwcms- folder onto the old one on my ft-server? Thus deleting all the site's currently content? All the articles, uploaded photos, the design and such? That can't be right, right?

What to do?

sorry
yes - you have to upload all Files from the new Version
but there http://www.phpwcms-docu.de/update_to_dev._1.1.x.phtml
is almost every Step described
also here in Forum x-times just use the Serch Function of the Forum
or be more specific where your Problem is

PS. your Content is stored in the Database not in Files - and if you upload the Files it will only overwrite Files with the same Name and 'your' Image Files are not in the Package ;)

Yeah, well, the forum search function gives me too much unrelated topics.

My problem is:
Do I have to overwrite all my content?
And how do I get my content back?

Siily questions, not?

Okay, to be completely clear:

In my old phpwcms folder on my ftp-server I have all sorts of files, which is the content of the site. So the folders:

phpwcms_filestorage (15,4 MB)
picture (2,5 MB)
phpwcms_template
content/images (2,4 MB)

will all be overwritten by the new empty folders in the 1.2.8 update phpwcms folder.

That, again, can't be right.

Hi

no a empty Folder normaly didn't overwrite or delete Files - but if this happens, that is the Backup for :D
the content/images will generated new if they are deleted and they also will be rewritten by the upgrade-Function(s)

as I wrote - the Content is in the Database wich will be updated too but not deleted (Backup before)
your Layout (Template) is also in Database except your frontend.css
in Docu there is written
After you have made a backup of all your files as well as downloaded and unpacked the actual developer version (DEV), please edit first the file conf.inc.php. This file conf.inc.php is from now on in the following folder: config/phpwcms/.[/b]
Please edit the file conf.inc.php, so that the settings comply with the settings of the old version.

Furthermore you have to adapt the following files:

1. /config/phpwcms/conf.template_default.inc.php
2. /phpwcms_template/inc_css/frontend.css

These are the files that will be changed very often. If you have made further changes in other files, please adapt these files too.

Finally! I understand my confusion.

I was confused about dropping the new phpwcms folder onto the old phpwcms folder, because I was thinking in the way an operating system works (like XP or OS X). But I found out that this is not the same behaviour with ftp. Strange, didn't knew that.

Thank for your help!

d.

The update worked like a charm btw!
