new user, having problems with basic trial layout!

well i have entered all the details in the settings for the sample block layout, but it wont display like on the tutorial. it just displays a few thin lines of colour. when i type somthing in the template page that displays but the nav bar etc or content wont when i add there tags in.

CSS, Layout & Template pages work in conjunction for presentation of "content"... so typing into the Template defeats the flexibility of purpose. The Categories/Articles are the place for this "actual" content and the replacement tags with formatting tricks and such go into the template. You can have many templates for various differnt pages of the site.
