HTTP_RANGE works only for partial file downloads. So you will not see the header. But partial file downloads is disabled in current release.

I had the same problem with .pdf documents and some media-types (like .wmv). After updating my php engine from 5.0.4.4 to the latest release (5.2.0.0) it works like a charm!
