I find it frustrating that there's no easy-to-understand, step-by-step tutorial on how to set-up phpwcms. I thought it was supposed to be the user-friendly CMS, but even e107 is easier! (And yeah, I did find the outdated tutorial in this forum. No use.)
Anyways; I've installed phpwcms to a subfolder on my server. I logged in to Admin, created some categories, articles, a layout, and a template (I didn't change the custom template much). Now, when I open index.php, my server says there's no such URL/site. When I click to view an article directly from the backend, I do see it, but instead of my layout, there's the original, basic layout, like "My Custom Header" for header, and so on.
What did I do wrong, and how can I fix this?
To clarify: What I need is for index.php to show, and for the changes I've made in the layout to be reflected.

Re: Issues setting phpwcms up
There certainly is a lot to be desired with regard to good tutorial for this system. Persevere though, it will be worth it in the end.
Have you got the right template selected for the category your article is in?
In the admin section > site structure click edit on the category you want to change and then select your template from the Template: drop down menu.

Cheers, daniel.grant.
Thanks to your advice, I managed to sort my issues, at least for now. I have a couple of new questions, though, and will start new threads for these
