Intermittent Database Issues

My first post! Usually I can find what I'm looking for here or on the doc but this time I can finally admit defeat...

The connection to the database keeps going down intermittently & I get that all too familiar:

"We are sorry!
For service reasons the system is temporarily not attainable.
Visit us later again!"

But then all of a sudden, it comes back. Same for the front & backend BTW. I've been on with support but they say nothing is wrong with the mysql db. Any clues on what's happening here? I've done a re-install & everything.

I'm running 20060625_phpwcms_pre1.2.7 on a couple other sites on different servers from the same hosting company (all servers are setup identical) with no issues... few in the past but never a connection to the database problem.

Is there a way to do a test query or something like that to see how my phpwcms database is handling requests?

I know enough to be dangerous but not enough to figure this one out. If this has been answered already, I can't seem to find it here on the site...
