Ever heard of ERROR HANDLING?
When I did all the install work and opened the page to find it.. BLANK.. I nearly ditched the system outright. A simple error message saying "you need to define a template and add content before you'll see anything here" would explain what was wrong.

That's exactly my point. I'm not unmotivated; I'm an experienced programmer and open source user, so I knew to look in the forum to see that - surprise - someone else had the same misunderstanding.
But it's not a good sign. A newbie might give up, and someone more experienced might not want the hassle and go looking for a more mature solution. Which would be a shame, cos PHPWCMS is verrry nice.
At a bare minimum the page should explain why it's blank and include a link to the new content tutorial on the website. Another option would be to include some sample data. I'd be happy to volunteer to do that... well, happier if your response hadn't been to accuse me of lacking motivation, but still happy. Let me know.

I'm sorry i didn't mean to be so snappy and didn't mean to accuse you of being unmotivated. I suppose that with me, if i'm dedicated enough to get something working, whether i'm a newbie or not (which i pretty much am to this thing) I wouldn't give up at the first sign of trouble.
However you're right, we should be thinking of others that don't, and if we want to make phpWCMS noticable then we should have a link and description like you mentioned. Perhaps this could be something to place in the suggestions forum? If you create the sample data and have it ready, they can put it in the next release.
Again, i didn't mean to be snappy with you, my appologies.

How do I get into the admin area to define a template?
All very cool, and I am glad to see that BLANK is not an error.
Wolf,
To go to admin section just type:
login.php after your http://www.yourdomain.com, like:
http://www.yourdomain.com/login.php
Cheers
