How are templates, structure and layouts related to articles

Hi

I have setup a site structure, 3 column layout and a template.

The layout has all the background colours inserted and width measurements as they relate to the 3 columns. Table is checked off.

I have inserted HTML <IMG SRC=" into the various areas in the template

I then go to the article section and can view my template which is comprised of some graphics but mostly empty blocks.(as set up in the layout and template sections) Iwould like to insert graphics and text into these blocks. I thought the article section would allow me to do that but that is not the case. I try inserting plain text and uploading images, but they do not appear in the preview. I have visible check off.

How do I use a template so that I can create 10 pages with a common template design but with different items inserted? Is this the purpose of the article section?

A clue or user manual reference would be appreciated.
