Well it's been awhile since bumping this up so . . .
I'd like to have random photos supplied by Photopost Gallery on my index page. This might be simple for some, not for me.

I guess its more a Photopost Gallery issue then a phpwcms issue. Maybe you should ask at Photopost Gallerys support forum, if they have one?

I have searched there too but no one uses phpwcms.
But is has been some time ago.

but there must be some info about howto place images outside the Photopost Gallery

There is. Someone had a writeup how to incorporate Photopost into phpBB. I tried to follow the same instructions but did not work.

Photopost has a writeup how to include photos in vBulletin.
To include the PhotoPost "features" box, add the variable $photopostfeature to your template:

$header
$navbar
$photopostfeature

This places the feature at the top of the forum (as done on our site).

Add to the template

<br />
$photopostcats
<br />

When I do I see the variable name only. I've tried html and tries placing the variable between <? ?> and also tried Code.
