Your toughts about this forum software

Post by StudioZ »

Greetings to all and an Happy and PEACEFULL New Year to all of you...

When I can't come here everyday and... that I realize that I should browse back here to see if anything new is happening or anything security related had been patched... Well... When I come back... I suddenly realize that I missed a lot of posts.. where I could find usefull info and/or had helped out someone. Thanks to Pappnase for being here so often and... so friendly and prolific. He's doing a more than a great job for all of us

I sincerly beleive that the community here would benefit a lot from migrating from this phpBB forum to a vBulletin or InVision Power Board forum software. I know that there is a phpBB to vBulletin import script. Not sure about an InVision to vBulletin tough... ?

I know that vBulletin and Invision, both offers instant email notification. vBulletin also offers email digest notification. How is that for not missing anything...? Am I the only one to have meditated about this?

Let's share our toughts now about this...
Thank you for your inputs...

Cheers,

Yves

I think migrating would be a good idea...but I am not sure that this will be done as there is a lot of posts and users on this forum....

the extended features of the other forums would be a great advantage !!!

invision and vbulletin are great forums though... :-)

phpBB has also email notification and email digest notification. So that wouldn't be a reason to switch in my opinion.

Hello duergner,

I'll try to explain here a little bit better, the differences...

Ex. 01:
Forum:phpwcms/Category:phpwcms Discussion
If you want to receive instant email notifications for a new Thread in a Forum's Category like this one here (http://www.phpwcms.de/forum/viewforum.php?f=2)... in phpBB this is impossible. In vBulletin and InVision this is possible and very much used.

Ex. 02:
Forum:phpwcms/Category:phpwcms Discussion/Topic:Your toughts about this forum software
If you want to receive instant email notifications for a new Thread in a Forum category like this one here (http://www.phpwcms.de/forum/viewtopic.php?t=5109)... No problems here. It does it when you click on: Watch this topic for replies

Conclusion:
The problem for me is with Ex. 01:
Hope it helps you understand better my point... ?

Cheers,

Yves

In your profile under Preferences

you have:

Always notify me of replies:
Sends an e-mail when someone replies to a topic you have posted in. This can be changed whenever you post.

about the fun mod you found it here:

I knew about the Always notify me of replies.
I am using it

But... about your mod... ????
http://www.netclectic.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=4402

Unless I did not understood well... This has to be installed on the server side in the phpBB forum software folder. It has nothing to do with us - Users of the forums.

Yes you're right. That has to be implemented on the serverside.

But vBulletin has to be implemented there too.

Same with the MOD.

And I personally do not like vBulletin. I would prefer to have phpBB.

Then... Maybe Oliver could implement it on the Forums when he has some spare time... Which I doubt he has these days

We had a good talk here and... In conclusion... I beleive it would be best to implement the mod you talked on these forums here, rather than migrating to vBulletin. This way Oliver would be clear to work on the next realease instead. :D

I like vBulletin, particularly the developer hacks at vBulletin.org. But these three little links at the top of the phpBB index page give it (IMHO) an edge over many boards, including IPB and vBulletin.

View posts since last visit.

This gives you *one-click* access to:

what is new
what you have said about a topic before
who still needs help.

In one click I can see follow ups to this post quicker than reading an email.
