Seeing that Oli has been busy thinking outside the box "once more"
- just wanted to ask the community
- if anyone has an online demo of this new feature
- sounds really interesting
- but my imagination runs wild and am
too busy with client work to explore -- atm

very interested to see an online demo of the possibilities

didn't have the time yet to install the new snapshot version yet to test it..

is it possible to select an area of the picture for the preview image, or is it "select biggest possible square in the center of the image and resize to thumbnail size"?

Your second idea is the right one, no area selection available.
